Over 110 people have died in State protected accommodation since its inception




Since the establishment of protected accommodation, over 110 people have passed away there, reports Breaking News.

Since these facilities were opened in 2002, 114 people have passed away, according to recent data from the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS). This data was collected until December 31st of last year.

Twenty of the 114 persons who have died over the course of the 18 years did so off-site; the first seven died in 2021, followed by six in 2022, and seven last year.

In 2002, six deaths were reported; in the previous year, nine. The greatest number of deaths over that time, ten, happened in 2022. In 2011 and 2014, there was one documented death, reports Breaking News.

More men totalling 78, than women at 32, have died, with four unknown genders, in protected accommodation with the average age being between 26 to 39, followed by those aged 40 to 55.

Nigerian nationals are the largest ethnic group who have died, with 12 men and 11 women dying in government-provided facilities followed by Pakistan with eight men and one woman. The other nationalities who have died are Georgia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Eritrea, Somalia while 35 deaths account for “other” countries, reports Breaking News.
