Over 500,000 people in Ireland are missing out on tax refunds, says Revenue

The Revenue Commissioners estimate that over half a million taxpayers are not receiving their tax refunds, reports RTE.

According to the report, around €389 million in taxes may have been overpaid in 2024, and taxpayers are being urged to recoup their rightful share.

According to Revenue data, approximately 440,000 persons have learnt so far this year that they overpaid taxes in 2024, reports RTE.

Over €400 million in reimbursements were made as a consequence in January. Refunds on average totalled €900.

Approximately 66,000 people underpaid taxes last year, according to the report.

“We are working with those taxpayers to collect the underpayment by reducing their future tax credit, over a period of four years,” Aisling Ní Mhaoileoin, Revenue’s National PAYE Manager, said, reports RTE.

Revenue has started educating people about the advantages of using its myAccount services to submit their income tax returns.

Any further refunds that taxpayers may be entitled to can be claimed within four years, reports RTE.

Dan Oosthuizen of Revenue’s PAYE Services stated, “If Revenue owes you money, you’ll get a refund into your bank account within days.”

Numerous tax credits and relief options are available, such as those for rent, mortgage payments, health expenditures, and remote employment, reports RTE.
