More than 60 people have been confirmed dead, after Boko Haram militia fighters opened fire on mourners gathered for a funeral.
The incident took place in the Budu region of the country.
Witnesses say that militiamen rode on motorbikes, shooting indiscriminately against those gathered.
Local authorities say that the attack was done in retaliation to a recent incident where villagers managed to repel a Boko Haram offensive around the same area in recent weeks.
The Boko Haram group has been active on and off for the past decade. Its aim is to impose strict Islamic rule in the region.
