Over 8,150 abortions of Irish babies took place in Ireland last year, new report says

According to the Health Service Executive’s latest annual report, 8,156 medical procedures were completed last year under the Abortion Act 2018, reports RTE.

The HSE report found that 22 procedures were performed because of a life or health emergency, four because of an emergency life or health emergency, and 88 because of a fatal fetal abnormality.

In total, 8042 procedures were performed in early pregnancy.

The months with the highest number of orders placed were January, March and December, and the least in July, reports RTE.

The counties with the most completions are Dublin with 3,005, Cork with 734 and Limerick with 377.

The county with the fewest recorded completions was Leitrim with 48.

The report shows that four applications were accepted for consideration, but two applications were later withdrawn, reports RTE.

One of the applications met the condition for a valid termination of pregnancy, and one did not.

In 2021, 4,577 medical procedures were performed under the Act due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the HSE cyber attack, which was indicated as a significant decrease this year.

For comparison, there were 6,577 procedures in 2020 and 6,666 in 2019.
