A convicted paedophile in Kazakhstan will be the first sex offender to be chemically castrated after the country’s government passed a new law earlier this year.

The move which could be the first of thousands within the country comes as the state allocated in the region of €25,000 in funding to carry-out as many as 2,000 castrations on convicted paedophiles this year.

Although there has not been many calls from judges to use the one time injection on convicted child sex offenders, the case comes after a judge ruled that an unnamed man from Turkestan region receive the injection in the hope that it will prevent him from re-offending.

The injection which consists of a high dose of the Cyproterone drug apparently works by suppressing an offenders urges, but it does not necessarily render them sexually impotent.

Prisoners who are injected with the drug are also given medication and psychiatric treatment whilst serving their sentence in order to manage their urges.

It is reported that the Kazakhstan Government have issued the funding as the rate of child sex abuse crimes has significantly risen in recent years with over a 1,000 cases reported each year.

Although the new chemical castrations law has been introduced to prevent convicted paedophiles from re-offending, those found guilty face up to 20 years in prison.
