Papal visit to Ireland possible as Pope Francis is invited to attend the World Meeting of Families in 2018

Ireland could very well have a papal visit in the coming years ahead after an official invitation was sent to Pope Francis.

It is believed that Ireland’s Catholic Bishops have invited the Pope to attend the World Meeting of Families in August 2018.

The news of the Pope’s potential visit was revealed by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny who was speaking after an EU meeting in Brussels, Mr Kenny said: “If Pope Francis decides to accept the invitation, the Government would approve of that and would welcome Pope Francis and would make all the arrangements necessary to treat him in a manner befitting the head of the Catholic Church.”

Mr Kenny further explained: “It’s a matter for the Pope himself to decide whether or not to accept the invitation.” “It’s a very different kind of situation from that in 1979 (when Pope John Paul II visited Ireland), but then he’s a very different kind of man.”
