Parents to be hit hard as proposed new scrambler laws could see fines of €5,000 being issued

Parents who buy their under age children scramblers could be soon hit with a hefty fine, if Fianna Fáil’s proposed Bill is made law.

Under the new proposals submitted by Fianna Fáil’s John Lahart and John Curran, parents could be forced to pay a €5,000 penalty if their child is caught riding a scrambler or other sports utility vehicles.

The new laws which could come into effect later this year will also give Gardai the power to seize and destroy all sports utility vehicles such as scramblers and quad bikes if minors are caught using them in a reckless manner.

It is believed the new laws are being pushed forward as the number of deaths related to scrambler incidents has risen over the last five years.
