A Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) -Doctors Without Borders- facility in the Afghan city of Kunduz, Afghanistan, was flattened by an airstrike reportedly carried out by US-led forces.

While the Pentagon has acknowledged that strike operations were being carried out in the area at the time of the incident, they have not yet confirmed who, or what exactly caused the destruction.

The facility was the only one of its kind in the region, and provided medical care for victims of the conflict, regardless of ethnicity or affiliation.

US and NATO-led military operations in the area have been stepped up since the Taliban recaptured the town of Kunduz in recent weeks.

The White House released a statement on behalf of President Obama offering condolences to the charity.
