The Back to School Allowance is set to be expanded to include children in foster care, according to plans expected to go before Cabinet on Tuesday, the Irish Mirror has learned, reports The Mirror.

Insiders have confirmed that Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary will present a proposal to the government on Tuesday aiming to extend the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance to children receiving the Foster Care Allowance.

This support offers a one-time payment to qualifying families to help cover clothing and footwear costs ahead of the start of each academic year, reports The Mirror.

For the 2025 Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, the payment amounts are €160 for children aged 11 or younger by September 30, 2025, and €285 for those aged between 12 and 22 by the same date.

To be eligible, students over 18 must be enrolled in full-time second-level education at a recognised school or college in autumn 2025, reports The Mirror.

Providing this allowance to foster children was a commitment made under the Programme for Government.

It is anticipated that around 2,300 children currently receiving the Foster Care Allowance will become eligible for the Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, under the initiative being advanced by Minister Calleary, reports The Mirror.
