Please come home! Calls for more construction workers from abroad as 35,000 new homes are delivered

Approximately 35,000 new homes are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) has warned that housing start-ups continue to be weak, remaining only marginally higher than levels recorded in 2016, reports Breaking News.

Its most recent Housing Market Monitor indicates that employment in skilled construction trades has declined by about 35% since 2007.

BPFI chief economist Ali Ugur said there is an urgent need to recruit construction workers from overseas if housing delivery targets are to be achieved, reports Breaking News.

Mr Ugur told Newstalk: “In terms of the skills, I think the capacity restraints are probably still there. In our new updated housing plan, in terms of apprenticeships it’s a tricky one. You’re going to need more labour and that may mean bringing in more workers from abroad. At the same time, it’s a problem across the EU as well in terms of the skilled trade in the construction sector and the gap between demand and supply,” reports Breaking News.
