An elephant poacher who killed more than 500 elephants over 10 years has been sentenced to 30 years hard labour in Congo Republic.

According to Daily Mail, Mobanza Mobembo Gerard, known as Guyvanho, was given the landmark sentence last week in what becomes the country’s first conviction for animal trafficking.

Daily Mail reports that Guyvanho killed more than 500 elephants at Nouabale-Ndoki National Park since 2008.

Guyvanho was also given the sentence after he was found guilty of attempted murder when he and a poacher group shot at rangers in the park last year.

The sentence has been hailed by animal rights activists around the world as the Congo Republic looks to clamp down on wildlife poaching and ivory dealing.
