The Police Service of Northern Ireland have come under attack after they prevented a Republican parade from passing through Belfast city centre after it breached legal requirements set by the Parades Commission.

Petrol bombs, stones and bottles have been thrown at police after they prevented an anti-internment parade from entering Belfast city centre. The march was organised by the Anti-Internment League to mark the introduction of detention without trial during the height of the Troubles.

The march was stopped by police at Oldpark Road in the north of the city as it was supposed to have passed Millfield junction by 13:30 but failed to do so. Running an hour late, the parade was stopped by a large force of police. Organisers asked participants in the parade to leave peacefully when it ended.

Demonstrators held a short rally at police lines, leaving peacefully shortly after. However, about an hour later a crowd began to throw missiles at police lines, some even throwing petrol bombs. Police were forced to deploy water cannons. Earlier a crowd of loyalist protesters gathered nearby to protest against the march.

Translink has said that there were disruptions to some of its city centre routes, but that they have since resumed normal services.
