Policeman in charge on the day of the Hillsborough tragedy gets cleared of gross negligence manslaughter

The officer in Hillsborough on the day of the football disaster has been cleared of gross negligence manslaughter.

75-yr-old David Duckenfield was on trial for the deaths of 95 Liverpool fans who lost their lives in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield, Britain’s worst sports disaster.

The verdict from the majority of the jury in the Preston Crown Court is seen as a setback for survivors campaigning for justice in the past 30 years.

The public gallery could be heard with gasps when the foreman issued the verdict.
