Pope Francis is today undergoing surgery to rectify a problem with his colon.
The 84-year-old pontiff is believed to suffer from colon diverticulitis, a relatively mild condition that can cause discomfort and bleeding, but usually has no serious health implications.
The condition becomes more common the older the person is.
