Little Alfie Evans, who tragically passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, made a friend in the form of Pope Francis.

“My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30… absolutely heartbroken… I LOVE YOU MY GUY”.

Meanwhile, Alfie’s mam Kate James wrote on Facebook: “Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am. We are heart broken. Thankyou everyone for all your support”

Tributes have poured in from around the world and were led by the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis himself who had met Alfie’s dad Tom just a number of days ago.
