Possible breakthrough in sight as Mauritian government agrees to reopen Michaela McAreavey case

Michaela McAreavey is already 10 years dead and still no one has faced justice for her murder.

5 years ago, her husband, John McAreavey, stumped up a significant amount of money to entice people to come forward and finally do Michaela justice by putting the animals who murdered her behind bars.

John McAreavey made the offer of €50,000, or 2m Mauritian rupees at a news conference in the capital of Port Louis in 2016 when he was there searching for new evidence and witnesses with his sister.

He appealed for people to come forward with information about Michaela’s death in an effort to finally solve the horrific tragedy that befell her in January 2011.

But no one came forward and no new evidence was found with the case turning cold.

However, with one of Arlene Foster’s last duties of First Minsiter, herself and deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill contacted Mickey Harte and John McAreavey to inform them that the Mauritian government agreed to reopen the case and examine it for further evidence.

Hopes remain high that this time something of significance could come out of it.
