The autopsy carried out on Prince’s body has revealed that he died of an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl, according to a Minnesota medical examiner.
Fentanyl is a potent opioid normally used in anesthesia and pain treatment both in human and veterinary medicine.
The 57-year-old artist was found dead at his home on April 21 last.
Though a well-known supporter of clean living, those closest to him were aware of long-running physical issues resulting from years of jumping from heights in heels during performances.
Prince’s death occurred two weeks after cancelling gigs in Atlanta due to poor health.
The post-mortem results are expected to be released officially on Friday.
