Poultry farmers stage protest outside Lidl stores in Cavan and Monaghan

Farmers have been protesting outside Lidl shops in Cavan and Monaghan, saying that they are not happy about the supermarket chain’s promotion on large chickens.

According to RTE, the promotion, which has been running since January 13th has meant that the price of a large chicken has been reduced from €4.29 to €3.49.  The last protest took place at the end of last year but farmers say that they have heard nothing since then.

Irish Farmers Association Poultry Chairman Andy Boylan has said that Lidl’s action “is that kind of kamikaze behaviour by retailers that has to be outlawed.”

He said that poultry farmers are very concerned about their future.  In response, Lidl have told RTE that promotional events like this are run under their “Super Savers” range, and that “Lidl bears the cost of such promotional items and the supplier receives the contracted price”.
