President Trump and President Putin to meet in Alaska for high-stakes summit on Ukraine war

President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, for a critical summit aimed at addressing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The meeting, described by Trump as a “listening exercise,” marks the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since 2019 and comes as the U.S. pushes for a ceasefire in the conflict that has claimed countless lives since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Trump, speaking at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on August 13, warned of “very severe consequences” if Putin does not agree to halt the war, hinting at potential sanctions or tariffs but declining to specify. The summit follows a virtual meeting between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders, where Zelenskyy emphasized that Putin is “bluffing” about seeking peace and urged that Ukraine must be included in any negotiations.

While Trump expressed hope that the meeting could pave the way for a second summit involving Zelenskyy to “divvy up” land and boundaries, Ukrainian and European leaders have firmly rejected territorial concessions without Kyiv’s consent. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that any agreement must prioritize Ukraine’s sovereignty and security guarantees.

The White House has downplayed expectations, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noting the summit is a chance for Trump to gauge Putin’s intentions. A bilateral lunch and a potential joint press conference are planned, depending on the meeting’s outcome. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy and European allies remain wary, with concerns that Putin may use the summit to push Russia’s demands, including Ukraine’s withdrawal from contested regions and abandoning NATO aspirations.

As the world watches, the Alaska summit could shape the next phase of Europe’s largest conflict since World War II, with global leaders urging a path to lasting peace.
