Donald Trump has become the first modern US President to criticise the country’s massive military industrial complex, which prolongs wars to generate arms profits.
According to CNN, Trump took aim at the ‘top people in the Pentagon’ during a White House press conference on Monday. He said that the main defense officials ‘want to do nothing but fight wars’ to keep the companies that make bombs and planes ‘stay happy’.
Trump’s unprecedented comments should come as a historical day for anti-war activists, who have long blamed America’s history of unsuccessful wars on the strong arms trade lobby who use their political influence to maintain conflicts and the large contracts they bring.
Despite inexplicably being hailed by many as a peace icon, former president Barack Obama did very little to take on the military arms industry, introducing the lucrative and controversial era of ‘Drone Warfare’ to American foreign policy that has led to deaths and destruction across the Middle East.
