A prisoner who escaped from custody from Tallaght Hospital yesterday afternoon has been recaptured by police in Belfast this evening.

Derek Brockwell (53) a convicted armed robber from the UK had been on the run following his escape from the Hospital, after he was brought for routine medical treatment. Two prison officers were brutally attacked and stabbed during the escape, they currently remain in serious condition in hospital. Mr Brockwell, who has been classed as a dangerous inmate, was caught sitting outside Wetherspoons Pub on Belfast’s Dublin Road this evening.

It is believed that officers from the PSNI spotted a man matching the description of Brockwell in the vicinity of the pub. The officers then confronted Brockwell in the area outside the pub, which is sometimes used as smoking area for punters. Officers then quickly subdued a dangerous Brockwell with a Taser, then transferred him to hospital via ambulance.

The PSNI say Brockwell appeared to have serious stab injuries when he was captured.
