The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that a protest by inmates took place Midlands Prison, last Friday.
According to RTÉ News, the demonstration which saw inmates smear human excrement on cell walls occurred following complaints about restricted yard access.
RTÉ News say the demonstration which involved 50 inmates, saw prisoners refuse to leave the yard and return to their cells.
It is believed that the prison yard time has been reduced in recent weeks following the introduction of Regime Management Plan, which was put in place to deal with staff shortages.
The Irish Prison Service say no one was injured in the incident.
