Pro Life Campaign ask Mary Lou McDonald live on the Late Late why she won’t allow a free vote on abortion

Things got quite messy at times on the Late Late Show when host Ryan Tubridy went after Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald.

Tubridy left few stones to be turned when he hounded her about her “tiofaidh ar la” quip at the end of her speech when she was announced leader of Sinn Fein.

She defended the IRA-associated slogan by claiming it didn’t mean what it used to mean.

The newly elected leader of the party was squirming in her seat however when a pro life campaigner took her unawares with an audience question about why she undemocratically won’t allow Sinn Fein TD’s have a free vote on the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

McDonald has promised a severe punishment for any Sinn Fein TD who doesn’t vote for abortion on demand up to 12 weeks – presumably this means being thrown out of the party, hardly fair and what many Sinn Fein supporters disagree with her on.

The pro life campaigner said “given the fact that a baby has a heartbeat at 3 weeks and that it has fingers, toes and can suck its thumb inside the womb by 12 weeks, surely you should allow Sinn Fein politicians to have a free vote”.

McDonald bluffed back with an answer that didn’t address the question. She has promised to severely discipline any Sinn Fein TD who doesn’t vote for abortion on demand up to 12 weeks. Do you think that’s fair? Tell us in the Facebook post comments.
