Professor Karina Butler says people won’t be able to choose what vaccine they want despite AstraZeneca change

The Chair of National Immunisation Advisory Committee Professor Karina Butler has said people won’t be able to choose which Covid-19 vaccine they want despite changes to the AstraZeneca roll-out.

Speaking at the National Public Health Emergency Team briefing, Professor Butler said there was no choice on vaccines and people should take whatever vaccine they are offered.

Meanwhile the Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has also said people wouldn’t be able to choose and urged those who are considering waiting for surplus supplies in the summer to take what they are being offered now.

Dr Glynn said that what is being offered is very safe, effective. He added the risk of catching Covid-19 and developing severe illness outweighs the risks of the vaccine.

Both Butler’s and Glynn’s comments come after NIAC recommended that the AstraZeneca vaccine should be used on those aged 60 and over.
