Professor Philip Nolan has said the current Covid-19 reproductive number is currently between 1 and 1.2.
Speaking at the National Public Health Emergency Team briefing, professor Nolan said the number is growing very slowly but the the number remains between 1 and 1.2.
Nolan said that it is very achievable to get the R number below 1.0 and called on the public to restrict their interactions across all age groups.
He added that NPHET has become concerned with the increase in cases amongst older people, however in recent weeks it has become more of a young persons disease with the median age being 30.
