The US State of Alabama has passed a bill that would require child rapists to be permanently chemically castrated upon completion of their prison sentence.
The bill was sponsored by Republican State Representative Steve Hurst and it would also require convicts to pay for their own medically induced castration and would be forced to undergo regular drug tests to ensure they were administering themselves with the drug or face re-imprisonment.
In order for such a sentence to be passed the perpetrator would have to be 21 or over and the victim be under the age of 13.
Representative Hurst had originally proposed surgical castration for child rapists but opted for chemical castration after human rights groups voiced opposition.
While the bill was passed by the State’s House of Representatives it is likely to be stalled by Democrat opposition in the State’s Senate.
