Protesters gathered outside Mountjoy Prison calling for release of Enoch Burke

A number of people demonstrated on Saturday afternoon in front of Mountjoy Prison, calling for the prompt release of teacher Enoch Burke, who was arrested for contempt earlier this week, reports The Mirror.

In the controversy surrounding transgenderism at the Wilson Hospital School in County Westmeath, he has now been detained for more than a year.

The demonstrators were well-behaved, according to the jail administration, who also reported no disturbances.

They could be heard yelling, “Free Enoch now,” reports The Mirror.

Devout Christian Enoch was fired when he disobeyed the school’s regulations and addressed a former transgender pupil using a pronoun.

He has often disregarded a court order prohibiting him from participating in protests on school property, reports The Mirror.

While the school was closed for the summer, Enoch Burke was freed from prison. However, he continued his one-man protest when the kids returned, and the High Court remanded him to prison on Monday night.

A Mountjoy source: “He shouldn’t really be in here – he is not a criminal and he has his Christian views. He and his family feel very strong about the whole transgender argument. Many of the inmates support him,” reports The Mirror.
