A 74-yr-old woman who was taken into custody for wearing a Palestine Action T-shirt during a protest in Belfast has now been released, reports Breaking News.
The arrest took place during a demonstration in Belfast on Saturday.
According to police, she was detained on suspicion of possessing an item that expresses support for a banned organisation in the Linenhall Street area of the city, reports Breaking News.
This follows the British government’s decision in July to criminalise public support for, or membership of, Palestine Action under terrorism laws.
In London, police arrested 466 individuals on Saturday for allegedly supporting the outlawed group during a demonstration in Parliament Square, reports Breaking News.
Footage posted online from Belfast shows police telling the woman — who was wearing a Palestine Action T-shirt — that she was under arrest for “possessing an article, namely a sign or T-shirt, that indicates support for Palestine Action”.
Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty International’s Northern Ireland director, condemned the arrest, calling it “outrageous”.
“Peaceful protest is a basic human right,” he said, reports Breaking News.
