Recruitment campaign to hire 300 prison officers in Ireland gets under way

A recruitment drive has been launched to hire 300 new full-time prison officers, reports RTE.

These new recruits are intended to help alleviate staff shortages and deal with a growing crisis of overcrowding in Irish prisons, where the inmate population has now surpassed 5,000, despite bed capacity being slightly over 4,600.

The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) has said that overcrowding has persisted since 2023, resulting in conditions across Irish prisons that are unacceptable, degrading, and inhumane, reports RTE.

The most severe overcrowding is currently at Limerick Women’s Prison, which is operating at 48% over its intended capacity.

There are currently 83 women detained there, although the facility only has 56 beds available, reports RTE.

As of yesterday, 5,477 people were in custody, meaning the prison system is now operating at 118% of its intended capacity.

According to the IPRT, some prisoners are having to sleep on mattresses placed on floors, contributing to what it describes as “inhumane and degrading conditions” that heighten tensions, reports RTE.

The capital budget for the Irish Prison Service in 2025 stands at €53 million, which authorities say is being used to add more accommodation space.

In the past few years, more than 300 extra prison places have been added.

“This year’s campaign is a vital part of a much wider investment in our prison systems.” said Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, reports RTE.

“Prison officers are at the heart of our justice system and have the potential to positively impact the lives of some of Ireland’s most vulnerable people, as well as Irish society as a whole,” he added, reports RTE.

The Irish Prison Service has encouraged people seeking a meaningful and dynamic career to consider applying.

“The Government is committed to ensuring that all prison officers are empowered and equipped to lead rewarding careers that make a real difference,” said Minister O’Callaghan, reports RTE.

The Director General of the Irish Prison Service said this recruitment campaign will be open until 1 August, 2025.

“The incredible work of prison officers is complex and often hidden from public view, but our annual competition and the launch of the virtual tour allow us the opportunity to let the public see the team work and the integrity, potential, safety and support that prison officers not only offer to prisoners, but to their colleagues as well.” said Caron McCaffrey, reports RTE.

Candidates who apply will take part in a detailed selection process that includes written exams, fitness assessments, interviews, and background screenings.

Those who are selected will go through comprehensive training to prepare them for the responsibilities of the role, reports RTE.

The 2024 recruitment campaign received over 1,500 applications, resulting in 271 new prison officers joining the Irish Prison Service.

A virtual tour of an Irish Prison Service facility has also been unveiled.

This new interactive online feature, believed to be the first of its kind, gives prospective visitors or inmates a preview of what they can expect when arriving at a prison, reports RTE.
