The Government’s chief whip Regina Doherty has come to the defence of Fine Gael leadership contender Leo Varadkar calling on those who criticise him to stop.
Ms Doherty who has pledged her support to the Social Protection Minister has claimed that Mr Varadkar has received unfair criticism from the Coveney camp in regards to his overwhelming support.
Speaking on Sunday Ms Doherty defended the leading candidate for he position by stating that Mr Varadkar has been given complete support due to his attention to detail.
Ms Doherty also said she believes that it will be two to one in favour of Varadkar when it comes down to winning the overall contest, saying: “There’s an impression here that this was kind of a stitch-up or a job arranged.”
“As I it happened nearly by accident, the reason we are voting for Leo in our numbers is because, we are impressed that he is so prepared, We are impressed that he is so detailed about his policy and future plans for the party and that didn’t just arrive for the past week, we have been impressed for many months and for years.”
