Relentless: Gaza says another 700 people were killed in Israeli air assault

Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said three hospitals in Gaza had stopped working after power generators ran out of fuel, reports RTE.

At a press conference in Ramallah, Ms Al-Qila said there was an urgent need to create a safe corridor to allow the treatment of injured and seriously ill people in Egyptian hospitals.

“I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza. Let me be clear: No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, reports RTE.

“But it is a drop of aid in an ocean of need. In addition, our UN fuel supplies in Gaza will run out in a matter of days. That would be another disaster. To ease epic suffering, make the delivery of aid easier and safer, and facilitate the release of hostages, I reiterate my appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire,” Mr Guterres added, reports RTE.

Top diplomats are gathering at the Security Council session, including US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who has previously rejected calls for a ceasefire, saying it would only enable Hamas to regroup.

A statement from Gaza’s health ministry said more than 700 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes overnight, the highest death toll in the 24 hours since Israel began bombing to suppress Hamas militants following an Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel.

Israel said it killed dozens of Hamas fighters in an overnight attack on the besieged enclave, but it would take time in the war to destroy the Islamist group, reports RTE.
