Rent regulator to tackle spiralling rent crisis proposed by Joan Burton

The figure of a rent regulator has been put forward by Tanaiste Joan Burton, in a bid to curb the housing crisis.

Ms. Burton’s idea somewhat conflicts with that of Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly, who would like to link rent to inflation instead.

The Tanaiste’s proposal will be considered at a Cabinet sub-committee meeting next week.

During Budget Day, Minister Brendan Howlin spoke about the Government’s priority in dealing with rent control.

Mr. Howlin said “The Budget is not the end of the journey,” he said. “There will be lots of other policy measures to be implemented before the term of this Government will be out – I’m sure that will be one of them.”

The Taoiseach added: “The Minister for Housing and Environment are obviously looking at a package of measures on the supply side which is the real problem here.”
