Reprehensible: Woman stole nearly €80,000 from elderly Irish gentleman she was caring for

A woman has confessed to stealing nearly €57,000 from an elderly man in Wicklow, whom she had been assisting in a caregiving capacity, reports The Mirror.

Dawn Lambert (62), of St Manntan’s Park, Wicklow Town, pleaded guilty before Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court to four separate theft charges occurring between September 24, 2022, and June 20, 2024.

The court was told that Lambert withdrew a total of €56,550 from an AIB bank account in Wicklow Town, which belonged to Patrick Maher, reports The Mirror.

Prosecuting counsel James Kelly informed the court that although Lambert was not a registered carer, she was known to the victim as a friend.

“She took advantage of the situation,” said Mr Kelly, reports The Mirror.

However, he noted that the accused was offering to pay some level of compensation.

Judge Terence O’Sullivan stated he would regard Lambert’s plea as an early admission of guilt, reports The Mirror.

It was disclosed during proceedings that Lambert had no prior criminal record.

Judge O’Sullivan instructed that a probation report be compiled and asked for additional details regarding the proposed compensation, reports The Mirror.

He also requested that a victim impact statement be provided.

Lambert was remanded on continuing bail and is due to return to the same court in early October for a sentencing date to be scheduled, reports The Mirror.
