Research suggests that immunity could last 8 months or longer in those who recover from Covid-19

A new study has found that Covid-19 immunity could last 8 months or even longer once a person recovers from the virus.

According to The New York Post, a study published in the Journal of Science has found that patients could have significant immunity 8 months after infection.

The study carried out by researchers at La Jolla Institute for Immunology, found that most patients had virus specific antibodies 6 months after infection.

Speaking about the findings to MIT Technology Review, co-author Shane Crotty, said that of the 188 patients sampled from the San Diego area most of them had a robust levels of memory B cells.

Crotty said the memory B cells which create antibodies could provide a blueprint to how a person’s immune system fights if the virus if they become reinfected.

He added the B cells could even give people immunity that could last for years.

However he did warn that reinfection is still possible and those with weak immune systems may be susceptible to reinfection.
