The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are stacked against you. A single ticket faces a one in a 292 million chance of winning.
Yet, three tickets beat those odds last night, scooping the largest lottery jackpot ever; a truly gigantic $1.5bn prize.
The tickets were sold in California, Tennessee, and Florida, though it will be several hours before lottery chiefs know if there’s any other winning tickets elsewhere.
Lottery prizes are heavily taxed in the US, but still, the amounts of money involved are so great that the winners will each receive a tidy sum which will set them up for life.
