Campaigners have made proposals to eliminate water charges and find alternative financial sources through “progressive general taxation.”

They have put together a Fiscal Framework document which outlines what a progressive government would be able to do, in terms of budget and finances, up to the year 2020.

Such document proposes that public investment should be nearly doubled over the next five years, increasing spending in public services and income supports of over €6 billion.

Overall, the proposed document provides for an extra €9.4 billion over four years. To do this, unions say that revenue from employers’ social insurance would need to increase by over €8 billion.

Also, the framework states that €300 million can be raised by applying a wealth tax.
