Rip-off Ireland lives on: Bin charges set to soar after new legislation kicks in

Wheelie Bins

The good ole’ spirit of Rip-off Ireland rages on, as bin charges are likely to treble for some customers after the introduction of new legislation.

In Dublin, for instance, two of the main players in the rubbish collection business -Greyhound and Thornton Recycling-, have dramatically and opportunistically increased their charges in the wake of the new rules.

Thorntons Recycling has replaced its €50 a year standing charge with a weekly €2 “service charge”, which means customers will now pay €104 from July 1.

Meanwhile, Greyhound has replaced its standing charge of €50 a year with a €3 a week service charge.

Some TDs have now said that the waste collection companies in Dublin are running a “cartel”, essentially doing and charging what they like.

There have been calls on the Government to introduce additional legislation to tackle the scandal.
