Rock on Rockall: Donegal fishing vessel turned away from disputed islet by UK patrol boat following Brexit

Donegal fishing men have been prevented from going about their ancient and sacred right to fish their country’s waters by a Scottish patrol boat which warded them off the disputed islet of Rockall.

The Department of Foreign Affairs was made aware of the incident and is in contact with UK authorities after the Northern Celt was boarded and its skipper instructed that he can no longer fish within 12 nautical miles of the disputed rocky outcrop as a result of Brexit RTE reported.

Skipper Adrian McClenaghan told RTÉ News:

“We were fishing in Rockall and members of the crew from the Jura boarded us. They informed us that we could no longer fish inside the 12-mile limit of Rockall”

The uninhabitable granite islet is at the centre of a sovereignty dispute between Ireland, the UK and Denmark with the UK and Ireland being the most contentious issues.
