The forthcoming Irish census will be the first to identify the Roma community as an ethnic group.

The census will take place on Sunday evening April 3rd after being postponed last year due to Covid-19. Travellers and Roma organisations have raised a question about ethnicity for many years.

The first question about travellers’ ethnicity emerged in the 2006 census. Roma representatives in Ireland welcomed the inclusion of their ethnic group.
