The mayor of a Romanian village has been reelected to office, two weeks after he died of Covid-19 complications.

Ion Aliman died in a Bucharest hospital aged 56, but that didn’t stop the residents of Deveseulu in the south of Romania from electing him to his third term in office. The deceased Social Democrat won 64% of the votes, according to CNN.

One villager reportedly told a local tv station that Aliman ‘was a real mayor to us’, saying they don’t think ‘we’ll ever have a mayor like him again’.

Romania is the worst affected country in the eastern European Union by Covid-19, with 123,944 cases recorded alongside 4748 deaths.
