A Direct Provision Centre for asylum seekers is set to open in Rooskey within the next couple of weeks, reports have revealed.

According to Shannonside.ie, the Shannon Key West Hotel will become a shelter for asylum seekers within the next fortnight despite protests in recent weeks.

Although no official confirmation has been made by the Department of Justice, it is expected that the direct provision centre will go ahead as planned.

The decision to place a direct provision centre in the region, has drawn criticism in recent weeks with many locals objecting to the proposal, saying the area is too small to house asylum seekers.

Meanwhile the hotel was the subject of two suspected arson attacks in recent weeks.
