Rower Damian Browne makes historic 112 day journey from New York to Galway

Hundreds of supporters attended the official return of athlete Damian Browne after completing his historic route from New York to Galway.

The former rugby player spent 112 gruelling days at sea in what he described as the adventure of a lifetime.

His solo crossing of the Atlantic ended in the early morning when he landed on the Galway coast.

The oarsman struggled as he approached Galway Harbour. His boat, Cushlamachree, landed on rocks at Na Forbacha just before 1am.

Emergency services were mobilised and gardaí from An Sp Idéal, Indreabhán and Carna helped bring Browne to safety, reports RTE.

It marked the end of a 16-week journey that began when Browne and his friend Fergus Farrell set sail from New York to travel east.
