The Road Safety Authority has expressed concerns over high numbers of fatal accidents on Irish roads in July.
The RSA has released their mid year review for 2015 which showed an increase in fatalities in July (20) compared to the period between January and June (an average of 13 per month). Their projections estimate that if these figures continue we can expect over 100 more deaths on Irish roads before the end of the year.
Already this year 101 people have tragically lost their in accidents on our roads, which is a decrease of 22 accidents compared to last year. However Road Safety Chiefs have stated that there is no room for complacency.
The report also showed that over one third of passengers and drivers killed were not wearing seatbelts and 10 out of 12 pedestrians killed in accidents weren’t wearing high visibility clothing.
Younger drivers and older drivers are still ranked as the groups highest at risk of accidents and the most accidents per week occurred on Sundays compared to midweek last year.
Garda figures show that 88,409 people have been detected speeding so far this year, 13,560 people have been found to be using mobile phones while driving and 3,666 people have been caught drunk driving.
