The Road Safety Authority has urged motorists urged to take extra care on the roads over the coming weekend as widespread heavy rainfall is expected throughout the country.
The Road Safety Authority say that poor driving conditions are expected this weekend due to spot flooding and they are advising road users to allow extra time for any expected journeys. A spokesman for the RSA Brian Farrell has said speed is a particularly dangerous factor on motorways and dual-carriageways. “The danger is of aquaplaning, that’s really where the tyres just lose traction with the road,” said Farrell. “There’s a film of water that gets between the tyres and the road surface. Look, the only way to avoid that is to slow down. “You really do need to give yourself time and space to react in an emergency because braking distances are increased.”
The RSA’s recent call comes after Met Eireann reported that 25mm of rain fell overnight, they also have issued a yellow status warning for the weekend with more heavy rainfall and windy conditions expected for many parts of the country.
