RTÉ Weather has introduced a new graphics system and updated its on-screen presentation, marking its first major upgrade in over eight years, reports RTE.

The redesign includes the addition of more local towns on the forecast and introduces a new 3D map of Ireland, which will more clearly display terrain features like coastlines, valleys, and mountains.

RTÉ stated that the updated system will help “easier to understand how conditions are expected to change” by using animations to illustrate shifting weather patterns, such as rain moving across the country, reports RTE.

The broadcaster said the new system will offer “improved accuracy and visualisation” by integrating advanced forecasting models and the latest climate data.

It added that the upgrade represents “a renewed commitment to public service, scientific credibility and sustainable production”, reports RTE.

David Timpson, Manager of RTÉ Weather, said the new forecasts will “produce clearer, more engaging content across multiple platforms, using the most reliable data from our partners at Met Éireann, while staying true to our editorial purpose”.

He continued: “With graphics and capabilities that are now best-in-class internationally, we’re proud to bring Irish audiences a weather service that rivals leading broadcasters around the world,” reports RTE.

Gerry Murphy, Team Lead of Met Éireann’s Television Meteorologists, said clearly delivering weather updates is “an essential” part of the service.

“With this new weather graphics system, our data and expert analyses can be visualised with greater clarity than ever before,” said Mr Murphy, reports RTE.

He noted that the new system would help ensure “that viewers have a clear understanding of upcoming weather and can prepare with confidence for weather impacts”.

Met Éireann Meteorologist Mark Bowe described the new graphics system as offering “fantastic visuals”, reports RTE.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr Bowe said the changes will provide more “bespoke weather forecasts for individual towns”.

“We’re going to be able to do 3D visualisations of the landscape, we’re going to be able to do flyovers of the country, we’re actually going to be able to zoom in on the weather, looking across Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster,” he explained, reports RTE.

“Nowadays, people have access to lots of weather information in different apps and greater visualisations, and it’s time we caught up with that,” he added, reports RTE.

According to Mr Bowe, the change in presentation will be “instantly recognisable”.

“People are going to know something great has just happened, it’s going to look absolutely fantastic,” he said.

Viewers, he said, will “see a 3D model of the world”.

The meteorologist added: “It’s going to be able to zoom in, we’re going to have great visualisation of the satellite data, you’re going to be able to follow the fronts as they go across the Atlantic. You’re going to see the radar, it’s going to be perfect,” reports RTE.
