Rubbish inspector: Local authorities will have the power to send TV licence style inspectors to households in a bid to tackle illegal dumping

Local authorities will soon have the power to issue on the spot fines to households who can’t prove how they are disposing of their household waste.

Under new proposals aimed at tackling illegal dumping, local authorities will have permission to send TV licence style inspectors to investigate a household if they can’t prove how they are disposing of their waste.

According to RTÉ News, the laws will see homeowners having to register with local waste management services in order to declare that their wheelie bin is being collected.

Meanwhile those who use civic amenity centres or share bins bins with neighbours will also have to prove how they are disposing their waste.

It is understood that local authorities will be able to track a household using Eircodes and those who cannot provide proof of how they are disposing their waste will be issued a €75 on the spot fine.

That figure could then potentially rise to €2,000 for repeat offenders.
