Ann Phelan made the announcement whilst she was addressing the Labour Party national conference in Co Kerry. Ms Phelan claims that there will no further cuts to services throughout rural Ireland.

Ms Phelan said: “At this particular moment in time, I’m drafting a memo to Cabinet that while the recommendations … are on the table, that there are no more closures in rural Ireland of post offices, of schools, of garda stations,”. Phelan also added: her advice extends not just to closures, but to “diminuation” of public services.
