Russian cannibal couple may have killed and consumed up to 30 victims over a twenty year period

Russian authorities are investigating the possible crimes committed by a 35-year-old Russian man and his wife, both of whom may have killed and eaten as many as thirty people since 1999.

The gruesome case came to light after a mobile phone containing pictures of a man posing beside the remains of a female was found on the street.

The person who found the handset reported it to the police, and this led to the arrest of a couple in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar.

Under interrogation, the man first said that he had found the human remains and taken a picture with them. He later confessed to two killings, but police believe there may be many more. Authorities have identified seven victims so far.

Local authorities are now investigating the extent of the couple’s involvement in unsolved crimes in the area.

Cannibalistic killings are not unheard of in Russia. Renowned killer Aleksey Sukletin murdered and cannibalized at least 7 females in the Tartarstan region during the early 80s, and Alexander Spesivtsev, deemed ‘The Siberian Ripper’ killed and ate at least 4 people during the 1990s, though he is suspected to have murdered many more.
