Ryanair intends to increase bonuses for its employees who identify passengers trying to bring oversized baggage onto flights, reports Breaking News.
The airline’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, stated he offers “absolutely no apology” for stopping those who are “scamming the system”.
During a press briefing in central London, Mr O’Leary informed reporters that the company plans to boost rewards for gate agents who catch passengers with oversized bags from €1.50 to €2.50 per item starting in November, reports Breaking News.
Additionally, the current monthly bonus cap of €80 will be eliminated.
Ryanair enforces tight baggage policies, with charges applied if an oversized bag is brought to the gate and must be checked into the hold, reports Breaking News.
The airline’s most basic fares include just one small bag that fits under the seat in front.
Mr O’Leary said: “I make absolutely no apology for it whatsoever. I want our ground handling people to be catching people who are scamming the system,” reports Breaking News.
He continued: “I am still mystified by the number of people with rucksacks who still think they’re going to get through the gate and we won’t notice the rucksack. We will, and you will be paying for the rucksack. You’re not getting on if it doesn’t fit,” reports Breaking News.
Mr O’Leary noted that around 200,000 passengers annually are hit with gate luggage charges, so “we have more work to do to get rid of them”.
The airline transported 200 million passengers in the 12 months leading up to the end of March.
Mr O’Leary added: “We want everybody to comply with the rules. If you comply with the rules, no issues. We are running a very efficient, very affordable, very low-cost airline, and we’re not letting anybody get in the way,” reports Breaking News.
