Say yes to the uniform: Garda officers to get new uniforms despite disagreement over its design

Garda officers on the beat could soon be getting a new attire as the Garda Comissioner Drew Harris confirmed that the current uniform design will be ditched.

In an announcement made this week, Mr Harris told the Garda Representative Association that the current 12 year old design will be replaced in the near future.

Although no official has been chosen for the new uniforms, it is believed that Mr Harris is in favour of introducing a uniform that is being piloted at number of Garda Stations around the country.

However the new Garda Comissioner’s plans could be changed as the GRA have revealed that a number of members on the force are not happy with the current piloted uniform which consists of a light blue polo shirt and navy cargo-style trousers.

The GRA say they have recovered quite a bit of negative feedback regarding the design and the association is pushing for more European style uniforms which consists of a baseball hat, polo shirt, and heavy-duty boots.

It is expected that an overall decision on the design of the new uniforms will be made later this year and Mr Harris has said both the GRA and An Garda síochána officers will be kept updated.
